Coastal Voices
This series turns from landscape to the people who inhabit it. Coastal Voices is a collection of portraits and conversations with those who live along Britain’s coasts; individuals shaped by proximity to the sea, by distance from the centre, and by a rhythm of life that resists easy generalisation.
Some were born here and never left; others arrived deliberately, drawn by work, memory, or a need for space. Each voice reveals a different relationship to place: livelihoods tied to uncertain waters, communities marked by continuity and change, and personal histories that unfold against shifting horizons.
These are not romanticised accounts of coastal life, nor are they narratives of decline. Instead, they are grounded testimonies, observations of endurance, adaptation, and identity and belonging.
The portraits are made slowly, in collaboration, allowing time for trust and reflection. What emerges is a quieter, more complex picture of Britain’s coastal margins: places often seen from the outside, but rarely heard from within. Together, these voices form a living archive—of memory, presence, and belonging—situated at the edges, yet deeply connected to the wider human experience.
